Painting North of the Arctic Circle

I am honored that the Kemijärvi Artist Residence in Kemijärvi, Finland has invited me to spend the month of July 2010 in residence painting and exhibiting my work. I am looking forward to a new perspective painting North of the Arctic Circle. I am not sure of the effects that the land of the midnight sun will have on my work, but I can’t wait to find out. I am excited to document my experiences while I am in residence and will share them with you here… stay tuned!

  1. Laura, Your recent posts on the pinhole camera and trip to the Arctic are interersting. I look forward to seeing how you transfer the effect of the pinhole to your painting subjects. Your reference to Arctic painting themes reminds me of a recent discussion I had with artist Peter Nisbet about his attempt to do some painting in the Antarctic. The penguins followed him around, the frigid cold effected his paint and the wind blew the canvas away. So, be careful and be sure to wear gloves.

  2. Thanks for your comments, Tom! I am looking forward to the influences the Arctic Circle will have on my work, as well as my pinhole experiment. I'm unsure of the outcomes, but I will keep you posted. I love your Morning Fugue Diptych. There is something so magical about it... excellent work!

  3. Congratulations, Laura! I'm eager to see how your experience in Finland goes. I've been ruminating on your thoughts on the sky and its transformations, and it's inspired me to think about certain things in a way I never have. For example, as you might know that I write about people of the past--my grandmother or great-grandmother--and although, I feel a great sense of disconnect because of place and time, we all have looked up at the same sky. There is some comfort in knowing this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm a big fan of your work.

  4. Thank you, Kanitha! I appreciate your kind comments, they mean so much to me. As an artist the greatest success for me is when I can connect and communicate through my paintings. I am honored my paintings have inspired you to see things differently. I agree, there is something peaceful in the fact that we all live under the same sky, we always have and we always will.
I am a fan of your writing! You paint beautiful pictures through your words and stories. It is a true gift, thank you!
