Inspiration Fell Out of the Pages

A few days ago, a friend of mine loaned me a book, and as I flipped through the pages a small card fell out that read:

“The thing I love so much about working in Denver is that you can look out the window, down any street, and see western romance and reality in a head-on collision.” – artist Karen Kitchel

As a native of Denver, I love this quote. As an artist working in Denver I have always been inspired by the everyday images that are unique to my hometown. I think it is important as an artist to be aware of daily surroundings and how they can either intentionally, or unintentionally affect the outcome of creative expression. How does your environment affect you?

The view at my studio, just North of downtown Denver. In my opinion, a perfect example of "western romance and reality in a head-on collision."

Castles in the Sky

Recently, I came across the French idiomatic expression “faire des châteaux en Espagne.” In English, it has a similar meaning to “building castles in the sky.” It implies almost impossible, unattainable goals. It literally translates as, "building castles in Spain." According to some sources, this expression originated from a time many centuries ago when there weren't any castles in Spain. I had a “light bulb” moment when I discovered this expression. It describes my newest paintings so well. I love the idea of castles in the sky, and striving toward the nearly unachievable.

My most recent paintings embody this concept of “castles in the sky.” They are building thunderheads viewed at higher atmospheric levels, almost surreal and fortress-like. They have harder edges than my previous work yet still evoke a certain cloudy softness. I love this contradiction. I love the idea of striving toward the impossible, because I believe anything is possible. After all, there are now many castles in Spain.

Maybe it is the abundance of natural light in my new studio or maybe it is my recent travels, but for some reason, lately I have felt compelled to start a new series of oil on paper paintings. I am captivated by the idea of a surreal dream-like world that exists in the upper levels of atmosphere. From an airplane window, I love looking at building thunderheads that are so striking from above, yet appear so ominous from below.

Posted below are two of my newest works on paper, both still in progress. I am planning a new series based around this theme of building thunderheads viewed from above. Stayed tuned for more soon...

Midsummer Night in Skagen

Browsing through my photos from this summer, I came across these from Skagen, Denmark. There was something disorienting and otherworldly about midnight in Skagen. That late night sky still haunts me. The sun was just setting below the horizon, only to rise a couple hours later. I watched as the Baltic and North Seas met tumultuously at the tip of Skagen, while an eerily orange full moon rose to the East. I felt as though I had stepped into a surreal dream world, and I was enchanted.

Every Painter Should Read This Book

I recently picked up a copy of Inside the Painter’s Studio, an insightful book by artist, Joe Fig. I was captivated. The author interviews inspirational painters such as Chuck Close, Ryan McGinness, and April Gornik along with beautiful photos of their studios. Each artist is given a set of questions to answer pertaining to their studio and the creative process that occurs within the studio walls. Each answer provides greater comprehension into the mysterious creative process. As I read the responses, I found myself relating to this sometimes difficult-to-articulate, intangible artistic process. It made me much more aware of the great importance of a good workspace, allowing for the maximum amount of pure, uninterrupted creative thought and expression.

I especially loved artist, Ross Bleckner’s response to the question, “Do you have a motto or a creed that as an artist you live by?”

Life is short. Life goes fast. And what I really want to do in my life is to bring something new, something beautiful, and something filled with light into the world. I try to think of that every day so that I can remember why I am coming to my studio. And then the other thing is, just go, just show up.

Emotional Reactions

First of all, I want to apologize for my blogging hiatus. It’s been a busy summer filled with travel and change. I spent most of my summer in Europe, getting goose bumps from art masterpieces.

From Munch’s haunting work at the National Museum in Oslo, to the dramatic work of Caravaggio at the Uffizi in Florence, I became overcome by one universal quality of art; it’s eternal. The Scream still has the power to evoke an emotional reaction from all who stop to contemplate it, and Caravaggio’s work still brings tears to the eyes of thousands of tourists from all over the world, every day.

I was blown away by the command that these works continue to have over all who view them in person, even though these masterpieces were created so long ago. Good art transcends time, cultural boundaries, societal standards, and connects us all through strong emotional reactions that tie us together as human beings. It is a wonderful thing to experience.

I am a proud participant in the twitter Art Swap 2010. Artist David Pringle is the organizer of this wonderful exchange of art created by artists from all over the world. The idea is similar to that of a secret Santa but better, in my opinion, because the gift is art. Posted below is the painting I created for the Art Swap. It was sent to a recipient thousands of miles away. I can’t wait for this artist to receive my painting in the mail, and I anxiously await the arrival of the art that will come my way.

Pinhole Study #2

Posted below is an image of my second pinhole painting study. My third pinhole study is currently in the works, and I will share it with you here once it has been completed. I plan to begin a large square painting based on these studies. Due to these studies, I have concluded that I like the concept of peering through a small hole or window into another more captivating world. There is something so haunting about that idea. It is beautiful, almost intangible, yet hopeful.

Front Range Fire

I am pleased to announce that one of my works on paper, Front Range Fire, was recently acquired for the permanent art collection of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. My work was chosen to represent wind energy. I am truly grateful that such a wonderful organization has selected one of my paintings for their permanent collection. It is such an honor.

Pinhole Study #1

Previously I had written a post about my idea to construct a pinhole camera in the pursuit of a new hazy, dreamlike perspective in my work. I wrote about building a pinhole camera and photographing sky. I had promised to share the painting studies that I would create based on this experiment. I have finally completed my first pinhole study, and would like to share it with you here. Because most pinhole cameras produce square images, I selected a square format for my painting study to evoke a similar feel. I wanted the edges of the study to be dark and hazy, to suggest the feeling of peering through a small pinhole into another more beautiful world.

Currently, I have two more pinhole studies in the works, and can’t wait to post the images here once completed. After I have finished these studies, I plan to create a large-scale pinhole inspired painting. I have enjoyed this new artistic journey, and sharing it here with you. More to come…

New Work

I would like to share with you my two newest paintings, Other Side and Mid-Flight Moguls. These two works continue to examine my fascination with skies above the clouds and away from all worries. I strive to evoke a moment of weightlessness and peace in creating these paintings. I am interested in further exploring ideas of being removed from anxieties and worries high above the earth’s surface. I will keep you posted on my developments. Thanks for visiting.

Why I'm an Artist

Lately I’ve been thinking about my sometimes capricious career. In the last couple weeks I’ve been faced with some challenges that have prompted me to reflect on my career as an artist. Being an artist goes well beyond just a career. It’s a way of life. It is who I am in my most honest essential form. I didn’t choose this profession. It chose me. I saw no other alternative. I have such an overwhelming desire to communicate things I cannot put into words, a desire to inspire others and evoke a moment of peace and hope through my paintings.

I find infinite more meaning in my life by pursuing my passion and striving to inspire serenity and beauty in others. A career as an artist can be challenging with so many uncertainties, but I can’t imagine any other life.

I would like to thank all of my blog readers, twitter followers, collectors, fellow artists, friends and family for your encouragement and support of my art. Each and every one of your kind words motivates me to continue to paint and inspires me onward. I am truly grateful for all of you. Thank you!

Palette Art

I've found my palettes to be forms of art in of themselves. I usually start very simple and basic using only primary colors, and then mix to create any color I desire. Oftentimes I will look at my palette after hours of painting and realize it has evolved into an interesting abstract composition on it's own. It continues to remind me to try more abstract painting.

Painting North of the Arctic Circle

I am honored that the Kemijärvi Artist Residence in Kemijärvi, Finland has invited me to spend the month of July 2010 in residence painting and exhibiting my work. I am looking forward to a new perspective painting North of the Arctic Circle. I am not sure of the effects that the land of the midnight sun will have on my work, but I can’t wait to find out. I am excited to document my experiences while I am in residence and will share them with you here… stay tuned!

Pinhole Perspectives

Two weeks ago I wrote a post about my idea to build a pinhole camera, in the effort to find a new hazy, dreamlike perspective. I was hoping to apply those results to my paintings. After three hours of camera construction I had built my first pinhole, and was ready to shoot some photos.

It took a bit of time and adjustment to get used to the idea that I would not have instant results with these photos. I wasn’t sure if any would turn out, but in a way, that anticipation was refreshing. Below are some of the best shots from my first roll of film. I would like to take some of the elements and distorted light from these photos, and apply that in my next painting. Although I don’t work from photos, I feel this was a nice project to see light and sky a bit differently. As an artist, the pinhole perspective inspires me. My current direction is dreamlike and soft. I would like my next painting to appear as if the viewer is seeing beautiful dreams through the lens of a pinhole. I will keep you posted on my next painting influenced by my pinhole experiment.

P.S. Interesting fact: Pinhole photography is the oldest form of photography dating back to as early as 500 B.C.

School Report on Golden Chalice

I received a nice email yesterday from a junior high school student that wanted to do an art report on my work, in particular, my painting Golden Chalice. I have never had such a request and I felt very honored.

She had asked me for some background information on my painting and inspiration behind Golden Chalice. I thought I would share my response with you here, perhaps to shed a little more insight into my work.

Here’s my response:

I am a native of Colorado, and Golden Chalice is inspired by the Colorado skies I have come to know so well. I create my paintings from things I have imagined, memories, places I want to go, and beautiful skies that I would like to see. Golden Chalice is a sky that I imagined. I want to create the sense of peace, serenity and beauty in this painting. My goal as an artist is to transport the viewer of the painting away from worries to a more peaceful place. I feel we could all use more moments of tranquility. That is what I strive to do with my work.

I like to make large paintings because I feel the large paintings best communicate the vast and infinite sky. I like my paintings to engulf the viewer, so that when looking at my paintings, all that is in the immediate range of sight is sky. I love vibrant, bright colors, which is why I chose such strong colors in Golden Chalice. I imagine Golden Chalice to be a late evening summer sky, just as the sun is setting. It is right after a storm, and the dark clouds are moving away from the setting sun, allowing for a beautiful display of color and light. I love the idea that after a storm there can be such a stunning sky. I find it very hopeful.

Golden Chalice took me a month to create, working every day. I don't always have a very clear idea of the way the painting will turn out until I start working. As I am painting I decide how it will evolve. I don't do any planning or sketching beforehand. I just let my mind wander.

The Pinhole Project

Months ago I had the idea to construct a pinhole camera to photograph my paintings and whatever else struck my eye. A pinhole camera is the simplest of cameras with no lens and a small aperture. I wanted to see how the pinhole would distort my paintings primarily for the sake of a new perspective on my work, and to continue with the dreamlike, surreal quality I have been striving to achieve in my paintings. I am interested in the otherworldly aspect often evoked with a pinhole camera. I am seeking the same aspect in my work.

Months have passed and I have still yet to begin this project. I bought a pinhole camera kit that currently still remains in the box. I decided I would be held most accountable to complete this idea by posting the stages here on my blog. I will begin construction on the camera this weekend and post the progress here very soon. One Small Challenge

This week I went from working on a 56” x 78” painting to three 4” x 6” paintings. Such a vast difference in scale! I was recently invited to participate in a show that required the size of all paintings to be 4” x 6.” Not one to turn down a challenge, I welcomed the chance to create something outside of my normal painting practices. In the end it was a good exercise in scale, and it allowed me to work on some new ideas for larger pieces. Needless to say, I enjoyed this small challenge.

Cleaning Out My Desk Brings Inspiration

I wanted to share these photos that I recently rediscovered cleaning out my desk. A collector and friend of my mine had sent me these photos from an evening flight right after takeoff above Charlotte, NC. The Sacred Studio

I was recently reminded of the Rembrandt painting, The Artist in his Studio, posted above. I have always felt a connection with this painting as an artist. The fondness and peace Rembrandt must have felt for his studio is clear in this painting. A quiet simplicity and warmth exists in the space. Rembrandt’s painting sums up exactly the way I feel about my studio. Hundreds of years have passed, yet the emotion remains the same.

The studio of an artist is sacred and magical. This is where the dreams, thoughts, and ideas are brought to reality. It is the medium between the mind’s eye of the artist and the realization of that vision.

When I am in my studio, time stops. It is just my vision and my work. I am entirely at peace and all worries are forgotten. I believe that everyone needs a sacred place to think and create.

So Emotional

“A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.” –Paul Cezanne.

Recently I came across the above quote, and it resonated with me. I have always believed that if my work wasn’t emotional, it wasn’t anything; it simply becomes decorative.

I view my paintings as diaries from the period of my life in which they were created. I place every thought and emotion I am experiencing at the time into the work. Looking back at older works, I can recall feelings from the time that they were created.

Typically artists have been branded as being very emotional and sensitive, and I am no exception. However, I have to question why this stereotype carries a negative connotation. Isn’t it the artist’s role to communicate emotions and ideas through art? I think it makes life all the more beautiful.

It Runs in the Family

Apparently a fascination with airplane skies runs in the family. Recently, I was talking with my grandfather, a retired meteorologist, about the new direction in my work toward airplane skies. He uncovered some photos he had taken out an airplane window years ago. He had quite the artistic eye when he shot these photos. It was such a treasure to be the recipient of these photos. They are inspiring!

This morning, the new day welcomed me with a brilliant sunrise. As the sun began to rise, it cast a pink glow on everything in sight, making the world seem rosy and surreal. It was just what I needed to start my day, much better than a morning cup of coffee.

Add Some Color to Your January

I am thrilled to be starting 2010 off right with a two-person show at the Lakewood Cultural Center in Lakewood, Colorado. Inspired by an exhibition Jim Peterson and I had at Space Gallery last year, Lakewood Cultural Center is hosting an exhibition of our work entitled, Color. The show runs from January 21 to April 4, 2010. I will be at the artist reception on January 21 from 5 to 7 pm. Please stop by if you are in the area. I would love to see you there!

How artists use color to convey emotions, movement and influence our perceptions.

We take for granted that artists use color in their work. Their placement of color is precise, the blues, the greens, the choice made with a discerning eye. This exhibit explores how different artists use color in their work - some to illicit emotion, some to capture movement and others to shake up our senses.

Laura Guese / Jim Peterson 

The same subject matter, and the same palette of colors, yet the outcome of both artists, Laura Guese and Jim Peterson is dramatically different. The sky has the power to evoke a full spectrum of true sentiments, which is the reason two painters of the Western sky, Jim Peterson and Laura Guese feel strongly compelled to speak through the subject matter of limitless atmosphere.  While both artists reside in the West, their interpretations of the Western sky vary greatly from one another. When exhibited together, the works of Laura Guese and Jim Peterson entice the viewer with consistent colors in both works while each create entirely unique expressions of light.

Winter Solstice Fire and Ice

In honor of the winter solstice today, I thought it fitting to write something about the shortest day of the year. I am fascinated by the sun setting low against a frigid, icy atmosphere, and the winter light unique only to this time of year. While it may be the shortest, darkest day, the sky can be brilliant with color.

The painting posted below reflects my attraction to the winter sky. I was especially interested in the contrast of the warmth of the sun against the wintry sky. I love the idea that even on the darkest, coldest day of the year there is a sense of hope and beauty from the setting sun, emitting vibrant, strong colors. It gives me peace.

I recently came across these photos that my brother had taken from a flight somewhere over Asia. I love the idea of being immersed between layers of atmosphere. This type of experience fascinates me. The photos will serve as an inspiration point for the painting I started last week. I began the painting with the idea that I would create the sense of flying between levels of atmosphere, when I remembered these photos that where taken last year. Given my artistic captivation with otherworldly atmospheric places, I think these photos offer a nice example of such. Although I don’t normally work from photos, I do love the dreamlike aspect of these skies, and I hope to create the same sentiment in my newest painting.

A New Direction

My latest painting continues with my recent theme of airplane skies. For me, this is a new direction in my work. I strive to create the sense of otherworldliness and the surreal. The jury is still out on whether I will continue with this new theme. All I can do is to paint what I feel, and currently I crave open, peaceful, and dreamlike spaces found in airplane skies. I desire to create these places. I really can’t explain the reason why. I am fascinated with them at the moment. I want to communicate what I feel through my work; things I can’t put into words.

Airplane skies captivate me for their quiet and tranquility. I am removed from problems and trivial matters when I am gazing out the window at 35,000 ft.

I feel as though I have entered a dream world cruising above the earth. There’s an unusual sense of peace in the high levels of atmosphere. That’s where I want to be.

Con Artists: Questions Every Artist Should Ask Before Signing a Gallery Contract

After spending my Sunday looking forward to a phone interview with a prospective gallery in San Francisco, I realized there are several essential questions every artist should arm themselves with when speaking with a potential gallery.

I was flattered that this gallery was interested in representing my art, and I hoped that it would be a good fit for my work. After previous negative experiences with a couple galleries due to my naiveté and strong desire to bring additional exposure to my work, I approached my interview cautiously.

Shortly into my conversation with the gallery director, I felt as though I was receiving a sales pitch. It turns out the gallery was asking a $400 monthly “membership fee” for each artist represented. This membership fee was to cover the cost of promotional efforts and advertising. The gallery represents 52 artists a month at the gallery. After some quick math I was able to realize that the gallery is collecting $20,800 a month from their artists alone. That’s a lot of promotional efforts! When I asked the gallery director if they were truly investing $20,800 a month into advertising for their artists, I was told that was not the case. The money was for other vague “costs” that he couldn’t explain further. I then asked for a financial breakdown of the $400 membership fee to see specifically where the membership fee would be applied toward marketing campaigns. He was unable to offer a breakdown of costs, or any more specifics about their promotional work. In addition to the monthly artist membership fee, the gallery had a 60% artist 40% gallery commission on any artwork sold. Further income is generated from party and event rentals held at the gallery several times a week.

To me, this seemed like a terrible business plan for the artist, excellent for the gallery. There is little to no incentive to sell art if the gallery is collecting a guaranteed $20,800 a month from the artists alone as well as the additional income from the frequent event rentals. It is unfortunate that galleries like this exist all around the world, seeming to prey on artists. These types of galleries aren’t interested in the artist but rather their checkbook. Artists as a whole are highly sensitive people, myself included. It is shameful that certain galleries prey on this sensitivity and desire to have art seen by a new audience.

I was motivated to write of my recent experience, in the hopes that other artists won’t allow these types galleries to take advantage of them. There are wonderful galleries out there, and I have had many positive experiences with them. However, as an artist it is necessary to enter any and all agreements with galleries fully aware of their conditions and business plan. Before my interview I compiled some questions to ask the gallery to see if they really had the best intentions for their artists. I hope this list will be of some help to other artists out there considering signing a gallery contract.

Here’s my list:

What type of representation agreement or contract do you offer artists?
How long is a representation agreement?
How many artists do you represent?
Is there a fee to show my work?
If there is a fee, what is the fee for?
Is there a commission in addition to a fee to exhibit?
What percentage commission do you take on artwork sold at the gallery?
What type of exhibition(s) will be planned for each artist?
How much space is allotted for each artist?
What promotional and marketing efforts do you plan for each exhibition and artist?
What is expected of the artist?
What costs must the artist cover?
In general, how many pieces of each artists work are at the gallery?
Is this an exclusive agreement?

After all of my previous entries about the inspiration I have found from airplane skies, I figured it was finally time I delivered some proof of my work. I recently completed some studies of these skies, each piece being 12 x 12, oil on panel. I have posted the images below. The four pieces were created after a sky I witnessed high above the stunning French countryside at dawn. Currently, I am working on a large piece (66 x 72) based on these studies. I will have more images of this new series soon. I’ll keep you posted.

Above the French Alps at Daybreak

A last minute trip to France recently brought me an unexpected sight despite the jet lag. I was flying over the French Alps right before sunrise, and was drawn to the sun rising over Mont Blanc. Continuing on my current theme of airplane skies, I enjoyed seeing a new perspective on the subject matter. I have already begun some small studies inspired by this sunrise, and I look forward to developing it further into a large painting, or possibly several paintings. I am excited about this new series, and I hope to post some images soon of these works. Please check back soon and thanks for visiting!

My Empty Studio

Thursday this past week I was left with an empty studio, which is a rarity for me. I have been working on a large (5 ½ ft x 9 ft) painting that was shipped last week to its new home in California. Also contributing to my blank walls, seven of my paintings were shipped to New York for my upcoming solo show with Viridian Artists opening October 6. Currently, three of my larger pieces are on reserve for a show with Earthwood Gallery in Boulder, CO opening on October 2. Needless to say, the last few months have been quite busy at my studio in preparation for these shows, as well as perfecting such a large commissioned piece.

Whenever I am faced with an empty studio, I am inspired and excited to begin creating again. It feels like a blank slate in a way and I look forward to whatever may be next.

I’m Sensing a Theme Here

You can probably guess what this post is about if you read my blog regularly. As mentioned in my last few posts, I have become very inspired by airplane skies. I love the surreal qualities of these skies. I recently uncovered the sunrise airplane photo posted below and I wanted to share it here. The sun had not yet risen above the clouds as my flight ascended over DIA in the early morning, allowing for striking formations and colors.

At my studio, I am currently working on an airplane sky painting. It is one that I have imagined based on these photos and experiences I have had gazing out the airplane window. This painting could be the start of a series of airplane skies, which I am very excited about. Please stay tuned as I will have photos of the completed painting soon.

The Three-Hour Sunset

What can I say? I am inspired. One of my previous posts about the brilliant sunrise above LA from an airplane sparked me to remember a sunset I watched flying west from Charlotte, NC last September. The flight left Charlotte right at sunset. Our plane was chasing the setting sun for three hours as we headed west. Needless to say, I was glued to my window for the duration of the flight, trying to form the perfect mental picture. It was so captivating; of course the in-flight movie was completely forgotten.

Yesterday at the studio I began a new painting. I wasn’t really sure how it was going to evolve as I started the piece, but my thoughts continued to wander back to that three-hour sunset from last year. Although I don’t work from photographs, I thought you might enjoy seeing some photos I took from that flight. What inspires me most is the otherworldly feeling these skies evoke.

Amber Morning Sky

An amber sky greeted me when I awoke this morning. What amazes me is that for the last few days here in Colorado the atmosphere has been hazy and ashy from wildfires burning as far away as California. In my opinion, ash-filled skies make for some of the most extraordinary skies. I love the amber light that is cast. It makes everything look rosy and surreal. I'm excited for tonight's sunset.

Early Morning Flight? Reserve a Window Seat

All complaints I had of a recent early morning layover at LAX just after a red eye flight were defeated by a red sunrise as we ascended over LA at approximately 20,000ft at 6:30 AM. Never have I seen a sun so brilliantly red as it rose from the mountains. The heavy smog only added to the vibrant sunrise. After a sky like this, I resolved to always request a window seat when flying. I would recommend you do the same!

Above the Clouds on Mauna Kea

Rising above the postcard perfect beaches of Hawaii’s Big Island, looms Mauna Kea, or White Mountain, the world’s tallest island-mountain measured from the ocean floor. At an elevation of 13,796ft above sea level, this dormant volcano will take your breath away literally and figuratively.

While the geological history of Mauna Kea is fascinating, I was more interested in the atmospheric and astronomical aspects that this mountain offers. The extremely dry atmosphere on Mauna Kea makes for an excellent location for astronomy observatories and general sky watching. Far below the summit exists a tropical inversion cloud layer. By ascending the mountain to the summit you are able to climb above the clouds, as I had experienced on a recent trip. It was a moment of inspiration looking down on the clouds from such an extraordinary site, and certainly well worth the trip. Below are some of my photos from Mauna Kea.

Lenticular Marvels

Other worldly and often resembling UFO’s, the lenticular cloud is my favorite type of cloud. Usually these clouds form near mountains, giving me the fortunate chance to see them frequently here in Colorado. Lenticular clouds form at higher levels of the atmosphere, and although they appear stationary, they are actually in motion as the result of strong wind flow over more mountainous landscapes. A change of weather is usually in the forecast with the sighting of this type of cloud.

Lenticular clouds have often inspired my work because of their surreal shape and texture. The idea that they are constantly in motion due to unstable atmospheric conditions, yet appear to be still is both fascinating and inspiring.

What Are You Listening To?

Often I am asked this question when people visit my studio while I am working. I listen to music constantly as I am painting. To me, music in the studio is as essential to the creative process as paints and canvas. Music helps to keep me motivated and tuned in to the emotions of the painting. There’s an amazing synergy between art and music, the inspiration process being so similar in the two. I like music that evokes the openness and energy of the works I am creating. Some of my favorites are: Wilco, Josh Ritter, Tom Petty, Pete Yorn, and Ryan Adams.

What does music inspire you to do?

What Causes New Yorkers to Stop and Stare?

A magnificent sky at sunset, of course. A few nights ago a spectacular display was seen above New York City that forced everyone to look up in awe. These clouds appeared shortly after a dramatic storm. They are known as mammatus or mammatocumlus clouds, and form usually underneath the base of a cloud, most often a cumulonimbus cloud. It is wonderful to think that even in Manhattan, a stunning sky can bring a few moments of fascination and marvel to everyone below. I love instances like those. Every worry is forgotten. So inspiring!

Currently on My Studio Wall

Lately I have been “in the zone,” with my most recent work in progress. After spending several months on smaller paintings for commissions and shows, it is wonderful to work on a very large scale again. When stretched, this piece will measure 56” x 78” and already that seems small. I would love to work ever larger.

A few months ago I completed a painting, Golden Crucible, below:

I was happy with the piece, and wanted to continue to explore the composition and color, but on a larger scale. My current painting draws from Golden Crucible, expanding upon the composition and the enveloping feeling evoked in Golden Crucible.

Below are some photos of my painting in progress. I still have more work to do on the piece, but the photos will give you an idea of my progress. I will post an image of the painting once it has been completed, so please stay tuned.

A New Cloud Formation Discovered? I’m Not So Sure...

Recently in the news there has been talk of a new and unusual cloud formation becoming more prevalent in skies around the world. The new variety has been named by the Cloud Appreciation Society as “asperatus,” or Latin for “roughed up.”

While I am a proud member of the Cloud Appreciation Society, I have my doubts that this is indeed a new variety of cloud, unseen before. Although currently the large majority of my paintings are created from atmospheres that I have imagined in my mind, I still spend a great deal of time observing the sky. I have for years. I think it should be a requirement if you live under brilliant Colorado skies. Clearly, I am no expert, but I can say with confidence that I have seen this type of cloud for as long as I have been observing the sky.

Can You Guess What My First Post Is About?

No surprise, it’s my studio, or “stu” coined by those who know me. Despite the rickety, uneven, old floorboards, sketchy alleyway, and the sporadic noises from the metal shop below, I love my studio. It feels like home. I figured it only appropriate my first blog post be my place of work. Something about the atmosphere of the place is conducive to work and clarity. I’m not even sure why that is, considering that on the surface it doesn’t feel like the most tranquil of environments.

Armed with tea and headphones, I find myself slipping into an unexplained creative rhythm as soon I set foot in the studio for the day. Unaware, I end up spending the vast majority of my time in my studio. There is a natural ease and peace to the space. If you are in the area, please feel free to drop in during gallery hours to experience my studio. If you aren’t in the area, below are some photos of the “stu.”
